The Erotic Thriller is a film and literary sub-genre which consists of a mixture of characteristics between erotica and thriller. Erotica is any artistic work that deals with erotically stimulating subject matter and is different from pornography. A thriller is designed to keep the viewer on the edge with suspenseful and sensational action. In other words an Erotic Film is a movie that is meant to capture your attention to excitement, sex, and suspense, meant to keep you guessing what's going to happen next.
BASIC INSTINCT
In the movie, Johnny Boz, A former rock star, is brutally killed during sexual intercourse by a blond young lady. The director Paul Verhoeven regales the viewer with a series of hyper-stylised sex scenes that look like sweaty aereobics videos. Right from the beginning we can see that the idea of the male dominant and the girl being a slave for the man to fulfill his sexual desire is altered. This is evident because the blond young woman, being the one doing the action of sex on top of the man, is in control of the situation and of the surroundings. In addition to that, she ties up Johnny Boz to the bed so she is able to exercise full power on him.
What's interesting about Basic Instinct is that this is purely based on sexual objectification of both male and female. All you needed was a thriller script, a suggestive title, and a couple of actors with ironically full gym membership and a willingness to take their clothes off.
