A psychological thriller is a suspenseful film or book emphasising the psychology of its characters, rather than the plot..  In a psychological thriller, the characters are exposed to danger on a mental level rather that a physical one. A key motif of psychological thrillers is a marked emphasis on the mental states of the characters: their perceptions, thoughts, distortions, and general struggle to grasp reality.Psychological Thriller films focus on story, character development, choice and moral conflict: fear and anxiety drive the psychological tension in unpredictable ways. they are suspenseful by explaining over characters' motives, honestly, and how they see the world.

There is no universally accepted set of guidelines for psychological thrillers.in general psychological thrillers integrate personal character elements into mystery and suspense films, many psychological thrillers resemble traditional thrillers or suspense films, only with a personal, internal antagonist rather than a traditional movie villain.

Silence of the Lambs
This psychological thriller is about a young FBI agent Clarice Starling she is assigned to help find a missing woman to save her from a psychopathic serial killer who skins his victims. Clarice attempts to gain a better insight into the twisted mind of the killer by talking to another psychiatrist. FBI Hannibal Lecter, who use to be a respected psychiatrist. FBI agent Jack Crawford believes that Lecter, who is also a very powerful and clever mind manipulator, has the answers to their questions and can help locate the killer. however, Clarice must gain Lecter's confidence before the inmate will give away any information.
Many psychological thrillers have emerged over the past years, all in various media (film, literature, radio, etc.). Despite these very different forms of representation, general trends have appeared throughout the narratives. some consistent themes include:

  • Reality
  • Perception
  • Mind
  • Existence/purpose
  • Identity
  • Death
